I AM writing to set the record straight, following the report of Westhoughton Town Council’s Fairtrade resolution (The Bolton News, March 26.) In 2009, Westhoughton Town Council passed a resolution that it agreed with the principle of Fairtrade. However, it recognised that, as a town council, with limited resources and powers, it was not in a position to influence businesses in the town. The council does not hold events where we can influence or promote a Fairtrade policy, nor do we have refreshments at council meetings.

There are a number of businesses and organisations in Westhoughton who already proudly offer a range of Fairtrade products. Bolton Metropolitan Council is a Fairtrade town and, as part of the Bolton family, Westhoughton is delighted to be included.

At our last meeting, Westhoughton therefore reaffirmed its original position, as set out in the 2009 resolution, and agreed with the principle of Fairtrade. The councillor who proposed the motion was not a town councillor in 2009 and therefore must have been unaware of the previous decision of the town council.

The public of Westhoughton should be reassured that its council does support Fairtrade.
