IT was very sad to hear that ex-councillor Peter Johnston has died from pneumonia at the age of 72.
During a long political career he worked very hard for the people of Farnworth and Breightmet and was also influential in many Bolton Council projects and policies, particularly transport about which he felt very strongly.
He actually felt strongly about many subjects and was an articulate and persuasive orator. He was also a genuine character – a man who regularly wore trademark shorts and sandals and really didn’t care what people thought of him.
It was what they did that mattered, and Peter Johnston did much for this town. He was a personality, a man you couldn’t ignore, and he cared passionately about people. It’s probably no real comfort to his family right now, but Peter made a difference – and not everyone can say that.
