I WAS reading the story regarding the appointment by Bolton NHS Foundation Trust of another, no doubt, high-priced group of experts to investigate coding errors in cause of death.

It occurred to me that the trust seemed to be awash with external experts and consultants, but things don’t seem to improve. Indeed, they seem to get worse with the possibility of excess deaths on a level greater than seen before.

If these patients did die of septaecemia that makes the situation worse as this is often treatable.

Perhaps the trust should think about using the money spent on external experts and consultants to improve patient care by reversing the decision to make frontline clinical and nursing staff redundant.

It would also improve the situation if the senior management was sorted out with the appointment of a full-time chairman and a permanent chief executive.
