More than £2,000 was raised by two football fans in the fight against prostate cancer after they themselves were diagnosed with it.

Keith Lilley and Mark Farrington marched to fundraise for Prostate Cancer UK  this week.

The pair, along with a group of their families and friends, walked from Old Trafford to the Toughsheet Community Stadium, marking the clubs each of them support - a journey of over 15 miles.

The pair, both aged 56, met while undergoing treatment for the disease, which they had both been diagnosed with in 2022. They are now recovering well following surgery.

Now, they have completed the march, and have raised more than £2,000 for the charity

Mark said: "It was a good day, we managed it alright. I had spent two days in bed, on Thursday and through most of Friday with a stomach bug, so on Saturday I was on tablets to try and get myself through - that was the hardest part.

"It wasn't too bad, it wasn't too windy and there was no rain. It was a little bit fresh in the morning, but it was a good day, probably a perfect day for walking.

"We are just shy of £1500 on the JustGiving page, but then my wife has raised £250 at her cafe and my sister has £250, plus various other bits. It is looking like we are going to smash the £2,000 mark.

"It has been a surprise, when you set the target, you think are we going to make it? But we have got good friends who have been doing their bit and the publication helped.

"I suppose a lot of people know somebody who has been in similar situation."

He added: "For men, it is on a par with women with breast cancer. We are trying to get awareness up, everyone knows how to check for breast cancer for males and females.

"But it is trying to get the message out: if you are over 50, you need to know that you should get checked."

An after-party was held at The Loft in Horwich to celebrate the achievement.

Mark said: "It was brilliant, really good, we had somebody from Bolton Wanderers Remembrance Group, an ex-player, John Thomas, came to pay us a visit.

"We also got food provided as well by 201 Sandwich Shop."
