WANDERERS are in a surprisingly strong position should anyone try to wrestle Chung-Yong Lee off their hands this summer.
News emerged yesterday that the Korean winger had secretly penned a contract extension last August – around the same time he sustained a double fracture of his leg playing against Newport County in a pre-season friendly.
Club contacts, who confirmed the news last night, say Chung-Yong is tied to the Reebok until 2015, meaning Trabzonspor would face a near impossible task if they chose to pursue him in the coming months.
Although that will come as excellent news to Whites fans, the fact that no announcement was made of the 24-year-old’s new deal leaves the whole matter with a slightly mysterious air.
It is understood the information was not passed on to the club’s communications department, possibly because the player’s injury dominated the agenda at the time.
Chairman Phil Gartside also confirmed a new contract had been penned via his official Twitter account last night.
