THE fight against relegation might be over – but Kevin Davies insists there is still plenty left to play for.
With just two games to go in the current campaign and safety secured, the pressure would appear to be off for Wanderers, who currently sit 14th in the table.
But the race for the club’s top goalscorer is hotting up, with just one goal separating Davies and Matt Taylor, on eight, and Gary Cahill on seven.
The 33-year-old striker came within a post’s width of netting his ninth of the season in the final stages of the 2-2 draw against Portsmouth on Saturday, and says the competition is hotting up in the dressing room.
“We’ve been having a bit of a laugh about it – trying to convince Matt Taylor that his second one against Stoke was an own goal,” he said.
“Gary Cahill came in at half time on Saturday and we were telling him he had to score a goal.
“There has been a bit of banter, which is good fun, but it’s all about getting points in our last couple of games and finishing on a high.”
Davies scored a career-best 12 Premier League goals last season, and boasts an excellent scoring record against Saturday’s opponents Spurs, who are chasing fourth spot.
The Whites skipper has found himself on the losing side against the north Londoners on just three occasions in 17 games, and has scored six times against them as a Bolton player.
He is hoping to continue that record at White Hart Lane this weekend, bringing him up to scratch with his own pre-season targets.
“I’d like to have scored more goals, obviously, but it is creeping up towards double figures and that’s what I’d always aimed for,” he said.
“I’ve always said I prefer to score important goals and it would certainly have been nice to get the winner on Saturday – but it wasn’t to be.”
Davies is keen to ensure there is no let-up from the Whites, and has targeted points against both Spurs and Birmingham – which could potentially be worth over £2million in prize money – as the minimum he expects.
“We’ll keep going because we want to try and remain unbeaten for these last two games,” he said. “It’s very important we finish as high up the table as we can.”
