JASON Kenny ended the European Elite Track Championships in sensational style last night when he took gold in the men’s keirin.
The Farnworth star, who had to settle for bronze medals in the team and individual sprint events in Poland, beat fellow Brit Matt Crampton into second place with the Czech rider Adam Ptacnik taking bronze.
The win made up for Kenny’s disappointment 24 hours earlier after he finished third in the men’s sprint and brought Britain their third gold of the championships.
The 22-year-old double Olympic medalist would have fancied his chances of claiming gold after Sir Chris Hoy’s mistake led to his early exit on Saturday.
But Kenny, who was part of the British trio who finished third in the team sprint on Friday, missed out again as Russia’s Denis Dmitriev took top spot.
Earlier, Hoy was beaten by Ireland’s Felix English in the last 16 at the BGZ-Arena in Pruszkow. The four-time Olympic champion, thinking his first knockout round race was won, slowed right down to conserve energy and to avoid humiliating his 18-year-old rival.
But it proved a huge error of judgment as English caught up and overtook Hoy, who had no time in which to respond.
