FC United are sweating on the fitness of top-scorer Kyle Wilson ahead of their clash with struggling Leigh Genesis.

The 23-goal former Crewe striker was badly missed in last weekend’s 3-0 defeat at Nantwich with a knee injury.

Wilson will discover the full extent of the problem when he sees a specialist today.

But the promotion-chasing Rebels will be desperate to have the UniBond Premier League’s leading marksman back for tomorrow’s visit of bottom club Leigh.

“He’s an important player for us and we saw that last week when he wasn’t playing,” said manager Karl Marginson.

“We got about 15 crosses into the box but couldn’t get on the end of any of them. If any of those had gone in it could’ve been a different story. We need to be more ruthless in front of goal.”

And Marginson believes it is vital his side pile on the misery for cash-strapped Leigh as they look to consolidate their position in the play-off spots.

He said: “Leigh are struggling financially and we need to take advantage of that and get back on track after the defeat at Nantwich.”

The Gigg Lane tenants will be boosted by the return to the starting line-up of captain Dave Chadwick with the defender now fully recovered from an ankle problem.

Genesis, five points from safety but with four games in hand of their closest rivals in the drop zone, will be hoping to build on their encouraging display in last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to title-chasing Hednesford Town.
