Olympic gold medallist Jason Kenny could win a second Beijing medal after another stunning performance in the Laoshan Velodrome.
Forty eight hours after a brilliant ride in the Team Sprint final, the Farnworth star was back in the saddle for the individual competition.
And the 20-year-old shows no sign of slowing down as Britain's ‘bikers’ continue to dominate in the Chinese capital.
Kenny briefly held the Olympic record as he qualified for the last eight.
Indeed, it took another stunning performance from triple Olympic title holder Chris Hoy to erase his name from the record books.
One of 21 riders chasing gold, Kenny posted a time of 9.857 seconds for the ‘flying’ 200 metres to determine race order for the rest of the competition.
It was a lifetime best and obliterated the previous Olympic best of 10.129 that had stood to Australian Gary Neiwand since 1996.
But Hoy wasn’t about to allow his young team mate to steal his thunder.
The Salford-based Scot thundered round the boards to clock 9.815 seconds and claim the record for himself.
And both men look well capable of attacking Dutchman Theo Bos’s world best of 9.772.
Kenny then progressed with victories over Poland’s Kwiatkowski Lukasz and Azizulhasni Awang from Malaysia.
To earn a medal ride Kenny must today overcome one of France’s leading riders, Kevin Sireau.
