Bolton racer Darren King is set to feature in Porsche Club Motorsport’s documentary, as he aims to win this year’s Porsche Club Motorsport Boxster Cup.

After competing in his first ever race series in 2022, and finishing fourth in the final championship standings, he had a year out in 2023.

But now King is back and feeling more competitive than ever.

This year he will be head-to-head with Mike Thompson, of Porsche Centre Bolton, with both being key members of the North West Region Five Porsche Club Great Britain.

King is owner of Unique Porsche Specialists, in Westhoughton, and is co-business partner in Unique Racing with Rob Carnson, with both having competed as engineers since 2014.

In 2022, King decided to sign up for the series and give it a go after being left feeling like he could “go faster” than other drivers.

Talking about his first races, he said: “Everyone always asks me, do you feel nervous?.

“But honestly, I just cannot wait. No nerves, just focusing on what I’m going to do next.”

King has always been a sporting enthusiast - but never in the driving seat.

With family season tickets to Bolton Wanderers and a keen eye for F1, he now feels he’s racing like the legends he once idolised.

He added: “One of the highlights of 2022 was Silverstone.

“That track for me stands out as it feels more in my era of F1, especially when I was able to stand on the podium where legends like Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell have stood.”

One thing that held King back in 2022 was his morals. Competing against his Unique Racing customers Vikram Sudera, Wayne Gregory and Darren Labbett, he felt as though he had to hold back and give his customers a fighting chance.

However in 2024, he has decided to hold no mercy, and says he’s going to give it his all.

The documentary series will follow King and Carnson’s Unique Racing team, and viewers will see the inner workings across seven circuits all around the UK throughout the summer and autumn.

It will give the audience a glimpse into the trials, heartache, emotion, energy, commitment and, most importantly, the passion behind the racing team and reveal what it takes to be competing in the Porsche Boxster Cup.

King said: “I said it in 2022, there’s not a circuit I don’t like.

“If you went round a circuit in a fast car you’d love every circuit - anything with an engine for me is fun. That rush is completely different to anything else.”

The first Porsche Club Motorsport race day takes place tomorrow - on King’s birthday - at Donington Park.

Race dates for 2024: April 21 - Donington Park National; May 18 -Brands Hatch GP; June 29 - Oulton Park International; July 13 - Anglesey Coastal; August 24 - Croft; September 15 - Donington Park GP; October 6- Snetterton 300.
