Former Wanderers defender Dean Holden has been made one of the early favourites for the vacant Charlton job.

The Addicks, who sit 17th in the League One table, sacked Ben Garner after less than six months in the hot seat.

Owner Thomas Sandgaard told the club's website: “We would like to thank Ben for his hard work and commitment to the job. In his time at Charlton, the club have achieved some stand-out results, including big wins against some of the better teams in this league.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to sustain a consistency of results and our league position and recent form have left us in a situation where we had to act to give ourselves the best opportunity to get the most from this season, as well as building a positive and winning environment for future years.”

Holden, who began his playing career at Wanderers under Sam Allardyce, is second in the bookies’ initial odds.

The 43-year-old departed Stoke City earlier this season after serving as Michael O’Neill’s assistant for around 16 months.

He also oversaw a 1-0 win against Blackburn Rovers during a brief stint as caretaker boss following O’Neill’s sacking.

Former Millwall and Queens Park Rangers coach Marc Bircham is the current favourite for the Charlton gig.

Ex-Bolton man Leam Richardson has also been included following his recent departure from Wigan.

Lee Bowyer, Kenny Jackett, Steve Cotterill, David Artell and Steve Morison are some of the other names on the list.

The Addicks are back in action on Wednesday night when they head to Stockport County in an FA Cup second round replay.

Anthony Hayes will take interim charge of the team while the club carries out its search for a new permanent boss.

“My complete focus is on trying to help the players and giving them real clarity in how we want to look with and without the ball. That’s my first and foremost priority,” he said.

“I understand how big it is in the community and what it means to the fans, so of course in the time that I am doing this job I will give everything I can to make sure the team is successful.”
