As frustration was vented on the pitch, in the stands and just about everywhere else after Wanderers’ disappointing FA Cup exit, it fell on the 20-year-old shoulders of Owen Beck to add a measure of calm.

The Liverpool loanee had played just over 20 minutes of a hugely underwhelming first round game but he came up to the media suite to make assurances to Bolton supporters who had grumbled their way out of the UniBol on Saturday evening.

“We just need to regroup and stick together, it’ll be alright,” said the Wales Under-21 international, making only his third appearances of the season.

“We win and lose together, no matter what the results go like. We won’t put blame on individual players because I definitely think that isn’t right.

“We have got the quality to come through now and start picking up better results.

“It was a tough game to find ourselves two down, it is always hard to come back. We made a few subs and changes which had a positive impact and nearly got back into it but it just wasn’t our day, today.”

Beck took the same level-headed approach when asked about his own circumstances at Wanderers.

The young defender cut short a loan spell in Portugal in the summer to join Bolton for the season alongside his good friend, Conor Bradley.

Opportunities have bee thin on the ground thus far but he insists his time under Ian Evatt has been productive.

“I just have to keep working and training hard,” he said. “I need to show the gaffer what I can do and I think I had a positive impact from the bench.

“I feel like I have learned a lot since I have been in here around senior players in a first team environment. It is doing me good and I am picking up on things.

“In reality I just want to be playing and I have to train as hard as I can do that.

“That’s football, really, you can only keep working hard to get the best opportunity to play. Once you do, you have to keep the shirt.

“The training has been enjoyable, it has been fun, but at times like this you have to stick together and then you get to come out of the other side.”

Liverpool have kept tabs on Beck’s progress and can hardly miss the headlines generated by Bradley since his arrival in the summer.

“It has been great having him around and, to be fair, there are other lads who give me loads of help – Traff, Kacha gives me loads of information. I feel like I am close with the boys and that helps,” Beck added.

“The way the team play suits me and Con. We play a certain way and we know we can make that work.

“It has been tough. You come into League One and it has been hard, to be honest. You have to be clever on the ball, be smart. But we’re both enjoying it.”
