EX-FARNWORTH Social Circle star Haseeb Hameed has been named captain of the England Under-19s team for a four-day Test match against Australia at Durham next month.
Hameed, a regular for his country’s age-group team for the past two years, will lead a side that could also include fellow Boltonian Matt Parkinson.
Hameed, Parkinson and Saqib Mahmood, all of whom play for Lancashire, have been named in a 16-man squad.
Fast bowler Mahmood is the only one of the trio to have debuted in Lancashire’s first team this season. All three players toured Australia in April with the U19s.
Hameed and Mahmood, meanwhile, have both been named in a separate 16-man squad for a five-match one-day series, but ex-Heaton leg-spinner Parkinson has not.
Hameed has had little captaincy experience, doing it only on a couple of occasions for Lancashire U14s and once for the club’s Academy side in a Northern League game at St Anne’s in 2013.
The Test match starts on August 4 and the one-day series continues a week later.
