EIGHTIES pop superstar Lisa Stansfield will star in a film about Northern Soul — alongside young Bolton dancers.

And the performers are now busy rehearsing at Rumworth Hall for their roles in the film, simply called Northern Soul.

It will tell the story of two northern young men whose lives are dramatically changed by the Northern Soul music scene in the 1970s.

Lisa, who had a worldwide smash with All Around The World, will play the mother of one of the lads, while Bolton youngsters will play dancers in youth club or night club scenes.

She said: “Ever since I can remember, Northern Soul was a big part of my life.

“It will be lovely to relive those times, in a way, through this film.”

Brent Howarth, aged 55, of Ainsworth Lane, Bolton, is a DJ at Rumworth Hall, where the youngsters rehearse at his soul nights.

He said: “There’s a group of young dancers who we call the Young Soulies. My son, Ethan is aged 15 and is a Thornleigh Salesian College pupil. Others include Laura West, aged 17, from Farnworth and Danny Elton, aged 15, from Westhoughton.”

Richard Searling, a former DJ at Bolton’s Va-Vas club and Wigan Casino, who lives in Ainsworth, added: “It’s astounding. These young dancers are terrific. They look the part, they can dance and they’ve even learnt the words.”

Elaine Constantine, a Bury-born photographer and film-maker, wrote the screenplay and is the director.

The 46-year-old said: “I grew up on the soul scene and have been involved in this idea for nearly 15 years.

“We formed the production company three years ago and have been raising funds. We’ve got investors from the UK, France and the United States but we’re looking for more.

Ms Constantine wrote the screenplay and is working with producer Debbie Gray. They are now looking for locations in Bolton and across Greater Manchester for places to shoot in June.
