A BABY who was diagnosed with cancer at just eight weeks old has finished gruelling chemotherapy.

Jade Walsh, now aged six months, was diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer and had to undergo surgery to have the tumour removed.

It was followed by a 10- week course of chemotherapy, which has now been completed — and doctors hope she will go on to lead a healthy life.

Jade’s mum, Jacki Walsh, aged 27, of Balcary Grove, Heaton, said: “She is doing really well and now we just have to go back for checkups every few months.

“The doctors are confident they have taken all the cancer out and the chemotherapy to clear anything else and we just need to make sure it has worked.

“This will go on for 10 years and when she is older, she will have to have her blood pressure monitored as she only has one kidney.”

Jade is the first child of Mrs Walsh and her husband, Ryan, and was born on March 6.

But during a routine checkup at eight weeks, the doctor was concerned that her stomach felt unusual.

Jade was sent for tests which revealed a Wilms’ tumour, a rare type of kidney cancer.

Mrs Walsh said: “She is a lot more alert now. I can see the change in her from when she was poorly.”

Friends and family have set up a Facebook group, Miles for Jade, and are raising money for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

A music festival is taking place at The Alma Inn in Bradshawgate from September 30 to October 2, which will raise money for the hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support.

It will feature more than 25 rock, metal and indie bands over the three evenings.

Tickets cost £3 a day or £5 for the weekend and are available from the pub.
