GRETAR Steinsson is convinced Wanderers can climb out of relegation danger if they can carry the form that saw them progress into the fifth round of the FA Cup into tonight’s Reebok derby clash against Burnley.
Steinsson broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season as Wanderers notched their first win under Owen Coyle against Sheffield United on Saturday before Johan Elmander came off the bench to double the lead six minutes from time.
That earned them a home fifth round clash against Tottenham Hotspur or Leeds United on the weekend of February 13 and 14.
Wanderers face a difficult task tonight, however, in what is likely to be an emotionally charged derby, against Coyle’s former side but Steinsson reckons they are already reaping the benefits of his arrival.
The 28-year-old Iceland international said of the Coyle switch: “The players have been buzzing with the new manager and the positive attitude he has brought with him.
“It’s a tragedy for Burnley, but that’s how football is. He wanted to come here. That is what the players see. He really wanted to come to manage this team and that gives us a little bit of a boost because we see he wanted this challenge with us as a group of individuals. He will definitely take this team forward.”
Steinsson is unfazed by the two Arsenal defeats and sees tonight’s match as an opportunity to put some points on the board.
“We were going to get something against Arsenal. We weren’t going to just roll over,” he said. “We need to keep on going. There are some massive games ahead of us and we need to focus.”
And Steinsson revealed he is already enjoying the new brand of football being instigated by the new boss.
“I’m really enjoying it,” he said. “We have got the players, got the individuals, and we can handle more offensive play. In recent years we have played more direct football but I think we have shown in the last couple of weeks that when we get the ball we can pass it around.
“The new manager brings some really positive things to the club, to the players and the team. I am looking forward to the next weeks and months.”
