A PSYCHIATRIC nurse who knifed a former boyfriend in the stomach after their relationship ended has been struck off by medical chiefs.
Peter Hartland, aged 63, attacked Gordon Carrington after calling at his home and offering him a bottle of wine as a peace offering on June 1, 2006.
But when Mr Carrington declined a hug and explained he had found a new lover, Hartland thrust a knife into his stomach.
Hartland, of Riversleigh Close, Barrow Bridge, Bolton, was struck off the register after a hearing of the Nursing and Midwifery Council yesterday.
Panel chairman Simon Evans said the committee could not be satisfied Hartland would not snap and reoffend in a work environment.
Hartland, formerly of Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, admitted actual bodily harm at Worcester Crown Court on October 11, 2006, and was given a six-month prison sentence suspended for one year. He was ordered to do 200 hours’ unpaid work and pay £1,000 compensation to Mr Carrington, of Wychbold, Worcestershire.
The NMC heard Hartland had twice been in trouble with the law before the attack on Mr Carrington.
In 1982, he was convicted of a sexual offence, and in 1999 he was cautioned for possessing a bladed article in a public place.
Hartland, who did not attend yesterday’s hearing, had previously indicated he wished to continue working.
