A first of its kind concept in schooling in Bolton has been given a glowing report by a top Government figure.
Jim Knight, Minister for Schools, visited The Orchards in Highfield, Farnworth, which brings together special and mainstream schools on one site.
The recently-completed development, which he officially opened, comprises of Cherry Tree Primary School and Green Fold Special School, known as the Upper Orchards. It is the first time children with special learning needs and those from mainstream schools will be taught in the same building in Bolton and is only one of a handful in the country.
Cherry Tree has one half of the building and Green Fold the other half. Although the children are being taught separately and the schools are keeping their identities, the pupils interact daily and share resources.
The old Green Fold building, further along Highfield Road, has been turned into a foundation unit with classrooms for nursery and reception pupils from nearby St Germain Nursery and the younger children of Green Fold.
There is also a youth club and children’s centre on the site, which is called The Lower Orchards.
Mr Knight said The Orchards was leading the way in promoting a partnership approach to teaching children.
The Minister added: “I thought the concept behind The Orchards was both innovative and exciting.
“The co-location means the schools work together in partnership to help every child reach its potential.”
