Greater Manchester Police confirmed that officers are investigating the rape of a woman in the area.
The area which is cordoned off is a separate footpath that goes around the back of Bolton Parish Church, and is surrounded by shrubbery.
Churchbank is regularly used by pedestrians to get to Bury New Road via a subway which goes under St Peter's Way.
The footpath that leads to the subway was accessible.
