The landlord of a village pub has been removed from his post just months after taking charge.

Pub company Stonegate Group say there is an ‘ongoing situation at the pub which is now part of a police enquiry’.

The Jolly Carter in Little Lever was closed on Monday, with a post on social media stating: “Due to unforeseen circumstances we had to close the pub, sorry for any inconvenience caused we are hoping to re-open”.

In a statement a spokesman from Stonegate Group said yesterday: “The Jolly Carter will reopen this evening (Tuesday, November 29) to continue to serve the community following the departure of Mr Dunne.

“This follows an ongoing situation at the pub which is now part of a police enquiry.”

Mr Dunne took over the pub in July and ran it with his partner Jonni McManus.

The two became popular members of the community and started clubs including homework help classes, a senior’s day.

The departure of the landlord came a day after the pub hosted a Christmas lights switch on event.

Mr Dunne told The Bolton News: “It’s a decision by Stonegate. They gave us 24 hours to leave yesterday morning.

“A new publican is coming in. All the staff will be the same and all the opening hours will stay the same “I want to wish the new publican all the best and hope the pub is a success.”

Mr Dunne declined to comment on the statement issued by the owners of the pub, but said rumours circulating on social media were not true.

Daniel said: “None of the rumours flying about are true."

Police have been seen at the pub.

Mr McManus confirmed that there were police in the area yesterday, however he claims that they simply wanted access to the pub’s CCTV systems for separate incident.

Little Lever and Darcy Lever councillor Sean Hornby says that he has been made aware of a recent police presence at the site.

He added: “It’s a shock to most people. They only had the Christmas lights switch on the night before and it looks to be well attended.”

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for a comment.

Many people have said they are sad to see the two leave on social media.

One said: "It's such a shame they have gone, they both made everyone so welcome, best of luck to you both, take care."

Another posted:"It’s been the best it has ever been in years down to you guys. Can’t see anyone being able to fill your shoes!"
