Young people in some Bolton schools will be able to wear their PE kit, with lessons moved to air-conditioned rooms as headteachers plans for this week's heatwave.
The Met Office issued its first ever red alert for Bolton - with the local authority putting in place its emergency measures for extreme weather to care for those most at risk, including the homeless.
Now two schools - at least - have updated their uniform policies for this week as temperatures soar to above 30 degrees.
Highs of 33 degrees are expected tomorrow and 36 degrees for Tuesday.
St Joseph's RC High School in Horwich issued a statement about uniform and also about the annual sports day.
Pupils will not be expected to wear their tie or blazer.
It stated: "As we look at the weather forecast for next week it looks as if we can expect some extreme hot weather.
Bolton weather set to soar as agencies issue warnings
"Due to this we will allow students to wear their school PE kit and trainers from Monday for the rest of the week. Should your child choose to wear school uniform they may do so without their tie and blazer. Thursday will be our non-uniform day.
"We will keep our sports day plans under review for Tuesday and these will be adapted given the predicted temperatures. It will now take place earlier in the day on the proviso that the temperature has not risen too high by then. Afternoon activities will take place indoors.
"Please remind your child to wear sun cream protection against the sun and to ensure they bring enough fluids or a refillable water bottle which they may refill during break and lunch. This is recommended for transport to and from school. Should they wish to wear a hat and long sleeve garment to cover up whilst in the sun we would encourage them to do so."
Westhoughton High School has also issued guidance to parents and children.
In a statement the school said: "The forecast is for very warm weather at the start of next week -Monday and Tuesday only. As a result, we suggest that your children attend school wearing either full school PE kit, school trousers / skirt and white shirt. There will be no expectation to wear a tie
"It will be important to remain hydrated and encourage your children to drink plenty of water on Sunday and carry water bottles with them during the forecast heatwave on Monday/Tuesday. The fun run and Alton Towers trips planned for next week will go ahead, but we ask that parents are understanding if a late decision is made to postpone or cancel events to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and students. If these events go ahead, please ensure your child wears a hat and has plenty of sun cream on and brings it with them to reapply.
"Where possible we have rescheduled lessons into cooler / air-conditioned classrooms and will monitor conditions in the school closely during the day. We currently expect that Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will see more regular temperatures and thus a return to normal expectations around uniform and school activities."
Parents are urged to check with their child's school about measures in place during the heatwave
