Emergency services were called to a field off a residential street in Tonge Moor last night after concerns for a man.
Police were called just before 8.30pm.
Officers say a man was suffering 'a medical episode' on a field off Cartmel Crescent and despite desperate efforts by members of the public and the ambulance service, the man died on the scene.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called at around 8.25pm on Monday 25 April to a report of a man suffering a medical episode on a field off Cartmel Crescent, Bolton.
"Despite the best efforts of first responders and members of the public, the man sadly died at the scene.
"His next of kin is aware and enquiries into the man's death are ongoing."
Residents said they saw a large police presence in the area yesterday evening.
