A CAR has caught fire on the motorway this afternoon, resulting in a lane closure on the motorway near Bolton.
The M61 southbound lane is closed on the exit slip road at Junction 4 towards Farnworth was closed for about an hour over lunchtime, after a vehicle broke down and caught fire.
It is currently unknown whether there were any casualties during the incident.
A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said at 12.30pm: "At the M61 southbound exit slip road at Junction 4, one lane has been closed due to a car fire.
"Traffic Officers are currently at scene and recovery are on their way to the area to assist."

The lane has since been reopened, according to local traffic officers.
