FIREFIGHTERS tackled a car fire on the M61 in the early hours of this morning.
A crew from Farnworth fire station were called to reports of the incident, between junction 3 and junction 4 southbound, at about 2am.
They arrived to discover the car engulfed in flames.
The motorway was closed down to one lane for about 45 minutes while firefighters tackled the blaze, which left the vehicle completely burnt out.
No one was injured in the incident.
Steve Coot, watch manager at Farnworth fire station, said: "The driver had done the right thing. He smelled smoke, pulled over to the hard shoulder and called us."
