A BODY was found on the train line at Lostock Railway Station.
British Transport Police were called to the stretch of line at the station, at 12.20pm, today.
A spokesman for the BTP said: “Colleagues from Network Rail and the North West Ambulance Service also attended and a body was recovered at the scene.
“Efforts are now being made to identify the person and inform their family.
“The death is currently being treated as unexplained.”
The incident caused a disruption to services between Wigan, Preston and Bolton with a number of journeys cancelled, suspended, or diverted.
Network Rail staff and officers from BTP remained at the scene of the incident for most of the afternoon.
A spokesman for Network Rail said : “Services are due to return to normal by 4.30pm”.
A passenger, Robert John Stevenson, expressed his condolences to the person on Facebook.
He wrote: “My thoughts are with a person who has been hit by a train in Lostock today.
“It just came on the intercom at Salford Train Station now.”
Ciàra Piper on Twitter wrote: “Massive train accident at Lostock train station.
“There’s loads of police and ambulance cars”.
It has not been confirmed by police whether the person involved had been hit by a train.
