A Warburtons lorry caught fire on the motorway.
Emergency services attended the scene to put out the blaze and make the area safe, between junctions 21 and 20 southbound of the M6 at Thelwall Viaduct, on Bank Holiday Monday.
Smoke could be seen billowing from the Bolton-based company's vehicle.
The carriageway was closed but lanes started to reopen from about 2.15pm to clear 'trapped traffic' from Woolston to Lymm interchange.
North West Motorway Police urged motorists not to leave their vehicles after some were spotted walking towards the lorry.
Witnesses said congestion 'backed up' for miles.
