IT all added up for pupils who took part in Bolton School's maths challenge.

Year six maths whizzes from 14 local primary schools sent out their very best minds to compete in three timed challenges, which demanded intellectual rigour and collaborative teamwork.

In a closely fought contest, Wood Fold Primary School ran out as eventual winners, with Christ Church CE School from Leigh coming second and Pike Lane Primary School third.

Each contestant in the winning team took home a £20 Amazon voucher and there were £10 vouchers for each member of the 2nd place team and £5 vouchers for the bronze medallists.

Each of the top three schools also received a framed certificate, and Hindley Green won the bonus round.

Other schools taking part included St Paul's of Astley Bridge, Heathfield CP School, St. Gregory's RC Primary, Horwich Parish, Eagley Junior School, Clarendon Cottage, St Philip's, St Peter's CE Primary School, Claypool and St Peter's from Hindley.

The event, which has been running for several years, aims to help get young people involved in maths in a fun way.

A spokesman said: "Over three twenty minute rounds, the girls and boys completed a cross number — like a crossword but with digits instead of letters — which had a mathematical twist to it. They were logic puzzles where the right things had to be positioned in the right place on a grid, and a speed round of 20 questions where they had to provide as many correct answers as possible.

"The Maths Challenge is just one of many events held at Bolton School for local children on Saturday mornings. They are challenging but fun days focussing on many subjects including science, languages, classics and sports."
